One of the most common questions we get from new clients is how often they should be getting a deep clean. The honest answer is that it depends on your home and your life, but after cleaning homes for 27 years in Placerville and the surrounding area, we can give you some real guidance.
What counts as a deep clean?
A deep clean goes beyond your regular weekly or bi-weekly cleaning. We are talking about getting into the appliances, wiping down baseboards, cleaning behind furniture, scrubbing grout, dusting light fixtures and ceiling fans, and hitting all those spots that do not get touched during a standard visit.
Think of it this way: a standard clean keeps your home comfortable. A deep clean resets it.
For most homes: every 3 to 6 months
If you already have regular cleaning on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule, a deep clean every 3 to 6 months is usually the sweet spot. Your standard cleans handle the day-to-day dust, dirt, and grime, and the deep clean catches everything else before it builds up.
We have clients who schedule a deep clean every season, right around the time the weather changes. It is a natural rhythm that works well for most families.
You might need it more often if...
You have pets. We love animals, and so do our clients. But pets bring dander, fur, and tracked-in dirt that builds up faster. Homes with dogs or cats usually benefit from a deep clean every 2 to 3 months.
You have allergies. Deep cleaning removes dust mites, allergens, and buildup that regular cleaning does not always catch. If someone in your household has allergies or asthma, more frequent deep cleans can make a noticeable difference.
You have young kids. Kids are wonderful and messy. Sticky handprints on baseboards, crumbs in places you did not know crumbs could reach, mystery stains. Families with young children often do well with a deep clean every 2 to 3 months.
Your home has a lot of square footage. Larger homes have more surfaces collecting dust and more areas that go unnoticed. The bigger the space, the more a regular deep clean matters.
You might need it less often if...
You live alone or with one other person. Less foot traffic means less wear. A deep clean every 6 months is often enough if you already have regular cleaning.
Your home is newer. Newer homes tend to have better sealed windows, newer HVAC systems, and less accumulated wear. They stay cleaner longer between deep cleans.
A few signs it is time
Sometimes you just know. Here are some telltale signs:
- You can see dust on your ceiling fan blades from the ground
- The grout in your bathroom has changed color
- Your kitchen appliances look dingy even after wiping them down
- The air in your home feels heavier or stuffier than usual
- You cannot remember the last time someone cleaned behind the refrigerator
If any of that sounds familiar, it is time.
What we tell our clients
We always tell people the same thing: do not wait until your home feels dirty to schedule a deep clean. By then, the buildup has been working on you for months without you noticing. A regular deep clean is like preventive maintenance for your home. It keeps things from getting to a point where they are harder and more expensive to fix.
